Alcohol Ink Background technique

Welcome to another edition of Technique Tuesday. Today I am sharing the gorgeous Alcohol Ink background technique.

I am playing along with a few challenge blogs as my design came together.

Timeout Challenges #TOC305 has a share your favourite technique.

Colour palette from Sunday Stamps #SSC378 I am using Real Red, Strawberry Slush, Flirty Flamingo and Bubble Bath with pops of Gold fo my neutral colour.

Sketch N Scraps January 20th throwback sketch challenge #SNS237

I’m getting inky with current products Sweet Jar bundle, January Product of Month Fabulous Sayings, Hearts of Love 3D embossing folder, Hexagon punch and from my stash rhinestone’s and gold twine.

Materials needed

  • Rubbing alcohol and small cup
  • Aqua Painter or Paintbrush
  • Stylus
  • Air pump or straw
  • Alcohol Ink pens or refills
  • Vellum or Window sheets
  • A well ventilated area to work in
Quick process video:

Process is very easy all you need to do is add your alcohol ink colour, drop on rubbing alcohol with paintbrush or stylus and use blower pump or straw to move the rubbing alcohol over your ink to create unique shapes and lines. Repeat adding colour and alcohol until you have the coverage and design you are happy with!

I played with two techniques styles to compare end results
  • Carefully applied step by step colour and alcohol and blowing in small areas at a time
  • Haphazardly applied colour all over followed by spritzing alcohol all over and adding the air blowing quickly all over.
Both offer a cool end result.

Optional step - add in metallic gold, silver, copper or bronze streaks to give that marble or quartz vibes!

Final design is just a stunning backdrop for your focal images.

Happy Stampin’

  2. Such a pretty card with your colors and the gold accents! It really caught my eye in the gallery. You didn't state it but I'm assuming alcohol ink backgrounds are your "favorite" technique? Or is it just using alcohol inks in general? Thank you for sharing this beauty at Time Out!
