Professionalism in the age of Internet

 Logo

Just wanted to share a PSA to remember it is important to be cautious about what we post on social media, about how we speak out on social media and so forth because under the CECE Code of Ethics and Standards for Practice we can all be held accountable for violating those standards by the College even when you are NOT AT WORK or engaged in your scope of practice - for example one of the CPL groups on Facebook where ECE often vent has over 14,000 members and you just do not know who is reading/watching or taking potential screenshots of the professionalism, conduct and potentially negative opinions of the field of the ECE within here.

If you read the CECE newsletters there was a recent disciplinary actions filed against a member of the College for behavior that happened AFTER HOURS between two colleagues who had chosen to socialize outside of work and an altercation happened that ended up being reported to the College and the person was found in violation of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and disciplined as a result.

The reality is that whether we individually agreed with it the College of ECE is something that MANY in the field, the AECEO membership and OCBCC and other early years advocates and so forth, have all advocated for DECADES to see happen - actively petitioning the government to help make it happen by changing the laws. creating new laws and providing start up funding to get it up and going as the first step in ECE being recognized as the professionals we are. Seriously as a new grad in 1990 this was the 'goal' talked about by professors and it took over 20 years from it to be an idea to be a reality - cause the change in our sector is SLOW.

Like it or not it is now been made a legal requirement under the Early Years Act to have a college that oversees and regulates the ECE sector so all the venting and complaining in the world is not going to charge the reality that the College is not going anywhere. So IMO we need to find a way to accept this as a professional requirement to practice now on top of the diploma and do our best to let the anger/negativity go because it honestly does not serve us - it creates a mindset of this field sucks where we stop remembering the things we love about the field and our WHY for entering it.

IMO it also does not send the message to the public that may be reading our comments or overhearing us at Starbucks that we are ARE professionals who understand the importance of having a regulatory body to protect the PUBLIC, to build their trust and respect in knowing that there is an organization that oversees the profession and holds practitioners to a higher standard than was previously exhibited and can actually prevent someone from practicing entirely. The time where substandard ECE who managed to pass college but do not have the actual skills or motivation to thrive in the sector were able to just jump from centre to centre after being fired with no way to 'communicate' to future employers that they should NOT be practicing. Sadly police checks ar NOT ENOUGH because you can not belong in this field and still not have broken a law yet that would show up on one. Sadly even references are NOT enough because no one is going to leave the person who FIRED them as a reference and most organizations have a liabity rule where they will not disclose it anyway even if they did leave them as a reference. At the end of the day THAT is the role of the College - to protect the public from substandard ECE who managed to graduate with the diploma but should not be practicing and to raise the bar on professional conduct of those it regulates. The college was NEVER about what it could actually do for US but rather how we can show the PUBLIC that we are professionals with high standards of practice who are deserving of the respect and resources of other professionals doing similar work.

Sadly we still have a LONG way to go to actually accomplish that much of which is our own fault because not enough of us are standing proud to be a member of said regulated profession and as a result most of the public does not even KNOW nor CARE that we are regulated. At the end of the day IMO if we want to be better paid and have more buy in from the public to FUND that for us we need to be doing a better job of SHOWING them everything we actually have to DO to practice ECE. Ask any parent if teachers are regulated they KNOW about the Teacher's College. The same cannot be said for US :(

5 Things To Consider If You're Thinking About Relocating

I also know that many members, myself included, are frustrated by the cost of membership in relation to our low wages - a very valid concern and that is something we can actually work to advocate to change while still remaining professional about the College and its role in public safety. As members we VOTE on who is going to represent us on the Colleges Board - so vote for someone who is going to actively champion ways to reduce the cost of membership and create policy where membership is reduced if retired/on parental leave/ medical leave! Perhaps relocating outside of GTA to lower the enormous cost of rent and other expenses in that region is the first place to start ... living in a digital era with remote work and remote meetings there is NO reason that the College has to be located where it is and for the amount of money the College spends on RENT alone the College could BUY a property in a region of Ontario that has lower cost of living - heck they could partner with other early years to house some rental space and actually generate INCOME for the College to reinvest in keeping membership fees low and offering more to membership!

The requirement of the CPL is not going away either that too so it is a waste of our time and energy trying to do away with it - it has been legislated right into the Early Years Act as a duty of the College to ensure as part of its regulation of the sector that professional development is ongoing and contains an annual self assessment component, goal setting and records of learning. Every regulated body HAS continual professional learning requirements built into their oversight mandate ... so while we cannot change THOSE things we can change what those things might look like! Members have been giving lots of professional feedback about the challenges of the current CPL process being used and some of it seeming redundant and time consuming on top of already busy lives of ECE - they have already made some ammendments in 2019 based on feedback and the last communication sent out indicated that they ARE still listening and are working on another revision to the process coming this Spring.

Personally now that we have a membership account to log into I would LOVE to see them develop the CPL so that it can all be done VIA that membership account portal so that members donot need to stress about loosing their work or not being able to manage the formating with the downloaded copies and so forth - just create all the required components IN the membership section and record it there - and that way the College has easy access to randomly audit and there is no added expense or work to ECE called to audit having to figure out how to get their documentation either converted to digital to send via email or the cost of copying and shipping out their CPL! It is 2022 and we have 55,000 members paying $160 annually SURELY there should be money in the budget to hire a tech whiz to create a website program that could manage that!

I AM coachable!

Crushing my 2022 goal to spend more time investing in my self and skills needed to rock my social selling journey!

Digging in with all the amazing team training and supports that are in place, joined the teams monthly book club which is reading Romi Neustadt book Get Over Your Damn Self! Loved chapter 1 and moving on to Chapter 2.

Seriously did not know what I was missing with Audible books - now I can ‘invest in myself’ while I am doing the dishes, in the shower, hiking or driving! So those mundane chore times can now serve dual purposes! Like honestly I got stuck at a train today and I was like “cool I can focus on listening to my Audible”

So grateful to @staceyregan.__  @laurie_drinkwater both are amazing mentors in the GelMoment family!

Stop Wishing - Start Doing in 2022

A lover of life long learning I am currently taking a training course with my GelMomenet up line, Stacey Regan, on how to brand yourself on social media to help spread your message! Also listing to podcasts from another amazing speak with the amazing Lori Ervin and working on some mindset and limiting beliefs with yet another empowering woman Tracy over at Loved from the Inside Out on Facebook!

So this was one of the videos shared as part of the mastermind class that Stacey is offering to her Gel Sisters ... like seriously that is what they call each other and it is one of the things I love best about social selling / direct sales opportunities is the amazing tribe of empowering woman who treat one another like family and share their wealth of knowledge with others to help build everyone up!

If you are looking for some motivation and ah ha moments around the role of your mindset and self care and love for oneself and others as we head in to 2022 ... take a listen because as always Oprah does not disappoint!

It is a 28 minute video and I will likely need to re-listen to it when I am not also driving to the gym so I can take some notes and create better action plan to 'start doing' so to speak. Spending my commute time to the gym listening to podcasts and motivational speakers is one of my goals for 2022 to make better use of my time!

Anyway I just wanted to share it with you all now before I loose the link because I really enjoyed some new tips as well as refreshers / reminders of things I used to do but than got too busy and had stopped - like the Daily Gratitude journal.

I totally need to pick that habit back up because like keeping a food journal to keep oneself on track eating healthy I know from experience that keeping a mindset of gratitude really does help with managing my anxiety/depression symptoms!

Take Care

The Challenges of being an ECE in 2021

Vent in the Comments Talk About What's Bothering U Help Each Other Go Ahead Vent in the Comments We Will Help You | Help Meme on ME.ME

OK so despite being forced off the front line due to Covid this past year, not having yet secured a new job, or being eligible for a Vaccine to allow me to return to work on the front I opted to renew my registration with the College of ECE for one more year to see if I can secure a 'next stage' career option in that time that is not directly on the front line but still in the field I have dedicated 30 years of my life too. It was not an easy decision  - I am feeling burnt out and defeated with the handling of Covid-19 in relation to the early learning and care sector! In my humble opinion the Ford government threw Early Childhood Educators and small business operators who operate early learning and care programs under the bus!

So with that decision comes a $160 bill payment for my dues at a time when I am not working and not eligible for social assistance for unemployment as I was self employed and the CERB ran out and the new program is confusing as to whether eligible for it as in 2020 I likely did not make the $5000 in self employment income due to loosing all but one client in March but still having all the same overhead of 5 children so actually am in the hole 'income' wise and than having to make the hard choice to formally close indefinitely in September in order to seek more secure income source because meeting the new Covid protocols in a home based setting is prohibitive and fear that in another lock down Ford would reinstate an Emergency fee order for anyone working from home and not using childcare as a result! .

Képtalálat a következőre: „too much paperwork meme” | Paperwork, Desk, Envy

Yet this decision has not only meant direct financial hardship it also meant that I spent the better part of today engaged in completing my Year One CPL paperwork for the CPL process for the College in order to renew and check the box that yes I have 'complied' with the process because this past year has been emotionally and physically HARD on me and I just have not had the mental or physical energy to sit at the computer and deal with it when I was unsure if I was gonna renew at all. So in addition to the unpaid time I spent engaged in hours upon hours of actual PD this past year and writing many blog posts to reflect on said PD or to advocate for our field and protecting choice in childcare I got to loose another 5 hours of my time because Early Childhood educators now have to participate in cumbersome paperwork around 'self assessments to identify goals tied to our professional standards and code of ethics, create learning plans for the 3 goals we identify and than engage in record of learning with reflection on how we plan to incorporate what we learned into practice' paperwork for the college in case we are ever 'audited' and need to prove to the CPL committee that we did indeed engage in said continuous professional learning process because sadly our 'word' that we engage in PD is not good enough for the government that mandated this process in their new Education Act!

Nap time, after too much paperwork. | Kittens cutest, Cute animals, Cute cats

I am also a sucker for additional punishment because in an effort to help educate the general public and as part of my CPL itself for trying to maintain my passion for the field by networking and collaborating with peers I have documented my CPL journey on my website and here on my blog to try to help raise awareness that we A) have a College of ECE in Ontario in the first place as most of the general public have no clue that ECE have to belong to this organization in order to even work in the field including those of us who work in unregulated sector and graduated from college with an ECE diploma even though our peers with no diploma can practice offering home based childcare with absolutely no training or belong to a regulatory body and B) to help raise awareness on the increase expectations that the government and employers have for us despite the very LOW wages that front line ECE make these days and the lack of funding set aside to support childcare in general!

Advocacy Matters - Home | Facebook

I do this above and beyond on my blog so when the public is complaining about the lack of quality childcare they can hopefully make that connections that it is only going to continue to get WORSE unless something changes drastically as recruiting ECE to enter the field is increasingly hard but now we have ECE who are fleeing the industry in droves because the reality is that most ECE can easily work in the retail or service sector for the same wage now and actually keep more of their income in their pocket because it comes with NO additional education required, without having to pay $160 annually in order to work plus the cost of CPR and First aid recertification required annually and often out of pocket plus and on all the cost of actual attending many professional development workshops and seminars out of our pocket but than add on the unpaid time it requires taken away from our families while engaging in said PD and now on top of all that having to spend hours more in bureaucratic paperwork so we can 'prove' that we have done it like we are ALL a bunch of untrustworthy children vs actual professionals!

Why Professional Development Matters – Ramblings of a Gifted Teacher

I have engaged in PD my entire career, voluntarily, because I do see the value in it to myself and those I serve. I also know that there are SOME ECE who graduate from college and NEVER do any continual professional learning and therefore become outdated and engage in practice that is no longer 'best' practice for the field and in an effort to raise the bar in the field we need to find a way to motivate those ECE to engage in the CPL process. However many of us are feeling punished with the level of expectations here and the College needs to find a way to lower the fees for membership because it is prohibitive for those who are often making just on minimum wage themselves to come up with another $160 annually on top of other costs of being in the field but to also simplify the CPL process for educators. Otherwise, in nothing changes, than I predict fewer and fewer are going to even enter the field as those in it steer them away from it and many ECE already in it are going to continue to look for ways to LEAVE it as fast as possible because we are just exhausted with the continual increase in the responsibilities and expectations of society for ECE with the ever shrinking resources and support to actually do our jobs all while being constantly bombarded in the media about the 'cost of childcare being too high' like the assumption that we are all rolling in the dough with those high fees!  Reality is offering quality early learning and child to children is EXPENSIVE and the costs just keep rising while the wages shrink!
