Natural Sunscreen & bug repellent in one

It’s that time of year again!

Homemade Natural Sunscreen Ingredients
1 cup almond oil (natural SPF 5)
1/2 cup coconut oil (natural SPF 4)
1/2 cup cocoa butter chips
1/2 cup beeswax chips
4 Tablespoons Non-nano Zinc Oxide (natural SPF 2-20)
2 teaspoon Red Raspberry Seed Oil (natural SPF varies 28-50)
2 teaspoon Carrot Seed Oil (natural SPF varies 38 - 40)
2 tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF 4-5)
2 tablespoon Mango Butter
1 bottle doTERRA Terrashield bug repellent

Using a double boiler method add all ingredients except essential oil into the pot and melt together until smooth. Suggest wearing a face mask when adding the zinc powder or being VERY careful not to inhale when in powder form. Once bees wax is well melted and blended into the mixture let simmer on low for about 20 minutes to ensure that your lotion does not get 'gritty' when it cools. Take off burner and allow to cool a bit before adding essential oil as heating oils can reduce effectiveness.

Pour into a glass mason jar or air tight container and allow to cool.

Apply 20-30 minutes before sun exposure.

Be sun safe!

Calling all Wine Lovers

A huge thank you to the lovely Kay for sourcing me this amazing stash of wine corks to add to my loose parts collection ... corks are great for sensory play in water for sink or float discoveries, making impressions in play dough, for imaginative play as children use them as pretend food, money, make up daubers and more  in their role play. They build with them in block centre and pattern with them with other loose parts! In the art centre they make great paint medium for dabbing!

But first they have a soak in Purify essential oil to help remove the wine aroma from them!

If you’re a wine lover remember to save your corks too for your community early learning program and support the reduce, reuse, recycle by up cycling these beauties into endless hours of play ♻️

Have an amazing day

Allergy Season Support

I use to suffer severely from seasonal allergies - I went years getting regular allergy shots trying to get them under control and had about two decades where they were 'mild symptoms' on occassion to the point I almost forgot how I use to suffer.

However last couple years allergies decided to make a vicious come back ... just being outside in the yard had my eyes watering and me skin itching and I could not go anywhere NEAR my garden without breaking out in hives ... it caught me off guard and unprepared for what was available for supporting me and I suffered back with the trail and error of what would help but not THIS year! This year I got a jump start with the help of doTERRA and essential oil blends!

Love the BREATHE line from doTERRA  ... the vapor stick, mints and oil blend rub helped get me through a nasty cold this past winter and its been a godsend this spring with the start of allergy season ... I have even been able to spend some time helping with the gardening with the help of the TriEase gels although admittedly kinda enjoying delegating that to my spouse cause while I love the look of a pretty garden I do not find weeding and tending the garden soothing relaxation at ALL would totally rather be on the deck sipping a lemon aid admiring his handiwork!

If you are a lover of the Breathe line or would like to try it JUNE is an awesome month ... you can earn several pieces from the line for FREE with a $200 PV US order! If you'd like more info about placing an order or how to get a wholesale discount so you can get even MORE of your favorite products at a savings please give me a shout!

DIY Essential Oil Mobiles

Wow ~ this is a cute idea from over at the doTERRA Canada blog on Facebook!
DIY Felt Mobile: Get a wooden embroidery hoop from the craft store in the desired size. Cut your favorite animals out of felt and hang them from the embroidery hoop, as desired. Essential oils can then be added to the felt to create a gentle, calming environment for your baby.

So if your wee one is having challenges sleeping a little drop of lavender on these before bed time to help provide a soothing sleep setting!

Please remember when using oils with wee ones that less is more and that while essential oils are an amazing gift from nature that even nature needs to be respected for its power over the human body! So fact is that some oils their little bodies are not yet ready to metabolize and that you can overdose on 'essential oils' just like you can on many other things from nature turning the gift into a nightmare! It is important to make sure to do your OWN research on which oils you are comfortable using with your little treasure because ther is often conflicting information out there on oil safety and so forth!

This is the recommended ideal amounts from doTERRA and their blog gives background around why they feel THEIR oils are safe for internal use as internal use of oils is one of those areas where you will find conflicting information.
My advice with internal use is to keep in mind 'accumulative dosage' so if you are taking oils internally to support health and wellness but are than also using aromatic and dermal applications for aromatherapy in the day is your 'total ideal' amount than surpassing idea.

So for example a YOUNG toddler who is being given our OnGuard capsule orally to help with immunity support could quickly reach 3 DROPS in the course of a 24 hour day specially the more everyday items we replace with essential oils. So keep in mind if they are than washing their hands with the On Guard soap which has essential oils in it, playing in a play area where we are diffusing oils and than applying an essential oil 'treatment' to feet before bedtime and so forth!

Oils are AMAZING gifts but they must be respected and used in moderation and there are definitely some that should NOT be used by young children at all!  Such as the advice from Robert Tisserand around the use of menthol's like peppermint and eucalyptus in small children!

Some tips for oil uses with children can be found on the doTERRA® science blog here and I personally love the resource from the Hippy Homemaker where they give tips such as SLOWLY introducing oils into ones lives because like anything we can have 'sensitivities' to natures gifts so introducing things like food and oils and so forth one at a time and 'waiting' to see how the body reacts is key. I also love how they  break down the oils by age based on their research ~ the article in its entirely can be found here

Stinky Feet Solutions

Man oh man I am not sure if it is in my head or what but this year seems to be an extremely BAD for stinky feet syndrome in the house!

I normally only notice this as a problem in the summer months when it is hot but this year MAN my front hall closet is needing to be consistently sprayed between the teenagers shoes and my spouses shoes plus 5 active boys in the daycare ... man oh man! Thank heavens for doTERRA®

Understanding what 'causes' stinky feet can help to create an action plan to have ones home smelling peachy keen verses the gagging like you've never seen!

So What Causes Stinky Feet?
The function of sweat glands is to keep the skin  moist and therefore supple, and to regulate temperature when the weather is hot or while you are exercising. There are more sweat glands in our feet than anywhere else in the body. However, unlike sweat glands elsewhere in the body, the sweat glands in the feet secrete ALL the time, not just in response to heat or exercise.
Feet smell when bacteria on the skin break down sweat as it comes from the pores. A cheesy smell is released as the sweat decomposes.
The main causes of sweaty and smelly feet are:
  • Wearing the same shoes every day. Feet become smelly if sweat soaks into the shoes and you wear them again before they are dry.
  • Poor personal hygiene.
  • Hormonal changes can cause feet to sweat more, so teenagers and pregnant women are especially prone.
  • If you are stressed.
  • A condition called hyperhidrosis, which causes you to sweat more than usual.

So what's the Solution?

  • If you are a loved one are prone to stinky feet it helps to wash your feet DAILY to reduce the bacteria on the surface for the sweat to activate ~ even if you do not want to have to have a full shower engaging in a nice foot soak can help. Adding some Epsom salts and lavender and tea tree essential oil to a pan of water and soaking for 10-15 minutes offers nice relief of not only order but muscle tiredness as well.
  • Choose your socks wisely ... certain fabrics can work to trap sweat an increase bacteria growth and therefore smell ... cotton, hemp and other breathable fabrics work better than nylon and synthetic fibers for breathing!
  • Rotate your footwear ... shoes not having time to dry out can be a major cause of stinky feet syndrome a the constantly wet/damp insoles are a breeding ground for bacteria. If you cannot rotate footwear than helping to ensure they have time to DRY can by making use of a boot/shoe dryer!
  • In a pinch and do not have time to let them dry or use a boot dryer ~ cornstarch will absorb moisture you can sprinkle some in and away you go!
  • Use a 'deodorizing spray' in your shoes ... if you want a clean and natural do it yourself option try a few drops of tea tree oil with 1/4 cup of witch hazel in a spray bottle! It provides a nice deodorizing as well as anti fungal  spray!
  • Make sure it is not something MORE than just stinky feet! Sometimes fungus and other issues can be going on with your feet ~ if you are seeing changes to the actual 'skin' on your loved ones feet consult a DR to determine what you are dealing with and advice on treatment! Athlete's Foot is the most common foot concern. This is one of our favorite go to supports for that

What Are the Causes of Stinky Feet?
The problem isn't your feet – it’s what your feet are wearing. Smelly feet is primarily caused from of a lack of ventilation for your feet. Each foot has more than 250,000 sweat glands, producing more than a pint of sweat in one day. That's a lot of moisture to keep pressed against your feet! People get smelly feet when the perspiration has no where to evaporate – but it is not the sweat that causes the foot odor. Bacteria that lives on the skin eats the feet’s sweat, producing isovaleric acid, causing the odor. Athlete's Foot, which is a skin infection caused by a fungus, can also cause smelly feet. Other factors that can cause smelly feet include certain medications, some diseases, poor hygiene, harsh environments, wearing poor-quality shoes and over-wearing shoes.
How To Prevent Smelly Feet
You can prevent smelly feet by reducing the amount of sweat captured in your shoes. Wear well-made shoes with breathable features, such as leather uppers or athletic shoes with mesh uppers. The socks you wear are also important – wear socks made with copper, wool, cool max or other moisture-wicking fibers to ensure ventilation. Some arch support insoles maybe have anti-bacterial or other odor-eating top covers that can help prevent smelly feet. Wash your body every day, and if you have a history of foot odor, clean your feet with an anti-bacterial soap. Wear shoes for the occasion and place. Excessive amounts of sweat will increase your chances for getting smelly feet, so do not wear thick socks, boots and pants if you know it will be hot outside. Do not wear the same shoes every day. Buy a variety of high-quality shoes so you can give each pair of shoes about 24 hours before you wear them again. Don't be embarrassed by your feet – be sure to keep your feet dry, clean and cool to prevent smelly feet.
Treatment for Stinky Feet
You can find stinky feet treatment products on our Smelly Feet and Foot Odor Remedies page. We highly suggest you wear moisture wicking socks to get rid smelly feet, as well as shoes made of high-quality, breathable materials, such as leather or mesh. Shop our healthy socks made of CoolMax, wool anti-bacterial and copper materials that will reduce foot odor. There are many different remedies for treating stinky feet, and if none of the following work for you, you should consult a doctor. Wash your feet with antifungal foot soap and wash your body every day to reduce bacteria and odor. You can also use antibacterial foot powder on your feet, Athlete's Foot cream or spray antifungal shoe spray inside your shoes. An easy and clean way to keep your shoes dry and odor-free is to put shoe inserts inside your shoes after you wear them. Some insoles have anti-odor or anti-microbial top covers, and those can help eliminate smelly feet. A great treatment for stinky feet that many people turn to are perspiration absorbent footbed liners – we sell Summer Soles shoe liners for men and women.

Back to School

Today was the first day of school for many kids here in Canada  ~ and with the first day of school often comes TEARS from either the children, the parents or both. Deb from over at Take Heart Canada had an awesome idea that I just LOVE to share with others this time of year ... Comfort Hearts make a great transition object for children and adults alike during times where separation anxiety might be running high. You and your child each hold a heart and fill it full of all the love and positive energy you can spare and than you exchange hearts and go on your way for the day ~ during those stressful times of the day you hold your heart and draw on its energy to help each other find comfort while apart!

Imagery is a powerful helper for the brain in helping with self regulation and comfort hearts are an amazing visual ritual for children and adults too! If you'd like to learn more about Take Heart Canada check out Deb's website here or give her page a like on Facebook!

If you'd like to take your ritual a step further than just the 'visual' you can add a 'sensory' aspect to it by adding an Essential oil that will help with calming the nerves. A few drops of oil onto the comfort heart can provide hours of aromatherapy for the soul. Here are a couple of my favourites for diffusing when we have a new friend in the program who is feeling a little anxious about their change in routine.

Balance
Is a grounding blend of oils from dōTERRA that is awesome in my experience for helping with anxiety.

The warm, woody aroma of Balance, the dōTERRA grounding blend, creates a sense of calm and well-being. Ho Wood, Blue Tansy, and Blue Chamomile relax the body, while Frankincense supports an overall well-being.
Lavender
Lavandula angustifolia or Lavender is known for its unmistakable aroma and its ability to create a calm and soothing environment. In ancient times, the Egyptians and Romans used Lavender for mummification, bathing, relaxation, cooking, and as a perfume. It's relaxing aroma is amazing at calming nerves and balancing emotions.

Wild Orange
Citrus sinensis or Wild Orange is one of dōTERRA’s top selling essential oils due to its energizing aroma and benefits. Wild Orange possesses stimulating and cleansing qualities and it can be used on surfaces as a natural cleaner. In my expeirence the cirtrus scent is also helpful at 'centering' emotions!

Serenity™
Calming Blend the Serenity essential oil blend soothes the soul, providing a safe haven from life’s daily stressors. Serenity’s calming aroma is the perfect blend to diffuse at bedtime or to add to your Comfort Heart.
Bergamot
Citrus bergamia or Bergamot is unique among citrus oils due to its aroma’s ability to be both uplifting and calming, while also cleansing the skin. An awesome addition to your Comfort Heart.

Use individually or combine the oils to create your own blends!

Have an amazing day!
