Supporting your local small businesses is more important than ever!

Love this message!

We all know that Covid has been so hard on everyone but those on the bottom of the pyramid of our culture - the small guy the front line work and the small independent local businesses have been hit SO hard because they do not have the huge profit buffers that the wealthy and large chain stores do to suddenly adapt to the changes Covid has brought!

I am one of those who suddenly found their small early learning business as well as my side hustles closed due to Covid restrictions and unexpectedly without an income and unfortunately with no 'financial buffer zone' of savings because there is no profit n the early learning sector and the years prior had been lean due to changes in my field making it harder to be fully enrolled despite the demand FOR childcare services the 'rules' make it hard to meet that demand!

Supporting small local business is a passion of mine - now do not get me wrong it is not that I want to send the message that having dreams to grow ones business 'BIG is wrong or that business franchises/chains or large corporations are inherently known for putting profits above customer service. I shop franchise/chains/big business too it is just that when it comes to certain goods and services where I have a choice to support one or the other I prefer to kind of personalized customer service that tends to come with the 'small family owned' type businesses!

Supporting your local small businesses each and every day need not cost a penny .... positive word of mouth and referring those in your life who MAY or ARE looking to shop for something or find a local service is the next BEST thing .... reality is that when you take two seconds to write a positive review, when you follow them on social media, authentically engage in a post by commenting, liking or sharing things that speak to you from their business pages than you become their volunteer marketing team and you save them from having to spend huge amounts of money that are often not in the budget of small business just to 'sponsor/boost' posts on social media to get that same reach!

It costs you nothing but a click of your mouse but it benefits them greatly - like we say in early childhood education 'sharing is caring!

What can you do TODAY to support a local small business? ?Tell us about YOUR favorite local small business in the comments!

 Ylang Ylang Cananga odorata

Ylang Ylang essential oil is derived from the star-shaped flowers of the tropical Ylang Ylang tree and is used extensively in making perfumes and in aromatherapy. In aromatherapy, Ylang Ylang is used to promote a sense of well-being.

According to Dr. Axe the benefits of Ylang Ylang could include the following:

Ylang ylang is considered an effective antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic and sedative. It has a positive effect on immune health, blood flow and emotions, making it a natural remedy for the endocrine, cardiovascular, reproductive and digestive systems. Melaleuca

Melaleuca alternifolia

Tea Tree essential oil has over 92 different compounds and limitless applications.

Tea Tree is best known for its cleansing properties. It can be used to cleanse the skin and nails to promote a clear complexion.

Dr Axe has the following to share about the Melaleuca benefits  which I found very helpful!
Tea Tree Oil Benefits

While records show that tea tree has been used for thousands of years by some indigenous people, thankfully today science is finally catching up and describing why tea tree oil is so effective. To date, over 327 scientific studies refer to tea tree oil’s antimicrobial prowess alone.
Some of the many traditional uses for tea tree include healing:
  • Acne
  • Bacterial infections
  • Chickenpox
  • Cold sores
  • Congestion and respiratory tract infections
  • Earaches
  • Fungal infections (especially Candida, jock itch, athlete’s foot and toenail fungus)
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Head lice
  • MRSA
  • Psoriasis
  • Dry cuticles
  • Itchy insect bites, sores and sunburns
  • Boils from staph infections
And this list doesn’t even include the many household uses of tea tree oil that can replace store-bought products in your cabinets:
  • Anti-microbial laundry freshener
  • Insect repellent
  • Natural deodorant
  • Acne face wash
  • Removes foot order
  • Removes mold
  • Household cleaner
In many cases, doctors of functional medicine will prescribe essential oils like tea tree oil and oregano oil in replacement of conventional medications because they’re just as effective and without the adverse side effects. An article published in the Journal of Phytomedicine evaluated the relationship between various essential oils and found that none (including tea tree) caused adverse reactions when taken with several different antibiotics. In fact, they discovered that some essential oils even had a positive synergistic effect, meaning they could help prevent antibiotic resistance from developing!

doTERRA® offers the following product guide with tips for use of Melaleuca!
PDF version here

Because these are both must havings in my regime I will have an order going in later today - if you want to get FREE shipping by piggy backing on my order and picking it up from me here in East end London when it arrives send me a message ASAP as I only have 3 spaces left on the cap of the order.

http://doterrablog.com/essential-oil-spotlight-peppermint/
Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Mentha piperita

Not only is peppermint one of the oldest European herbs used for medicinal purposes, other historical accounts date its use to ancient Chinese and Japanese folk medicine. It’s also mentioned in Greek mythology that the nymph Mentha was transformed into an herb by Pluto who had fallen in love with her and wanted people to appreciate her for years to come.

Benefits

Some of the most common peppermint oil benefits according to Dr Axe include:
  • Reduces stomach aches
  • Soothe digestive issues
  • Freshens bad breath
  • Relieves headaches
  • Antimicrobial properties
  • Improves mental focus
  • Clears respiratory tract
  • Boosts energy
  • Releases tight muscles
  • Cost-effective natural solution to replace pharmaceutical drugs

Some of my favorite Peppermint Oil Uses

  1. Muscle Pain Relief Peppermint essential oil is a very effective natural painkiller and muscle relaxant. It is especially helpful in soothing an aching back, sore muscles and achy joints, and melting away a tension headache. It is one of the main ingredients in the doTERRA® Deep Blue® blend as a ready made massage aid. Peppermint can also be mixed with Lavender can be used in a bath or foot soak to help improve circulation.
  2. Sinus Care and Allergy Relief – Peppermint acts as an expectorant and may provide relief for colds, cough, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis and as it is highly effective a relaxing muscles it is great for opening up nasal passages to allow for the draining of mucus.Inhaling diffused peppermint oil can often times immediately unclog your sinuses and offer relief to scratchy throats and colic. As a result it is great for diffusing during both allergy season and cold and flu season as well as combining with Eucalyptus for a chest rub when congested!
  3. Beauty routine  – Love having peppermint as part of my hair care regime ~ great for stimulating the scalp and helps to wake you up! Because it is a powerful antiseptic, peppermint can also help reduce dandruff and chances of getting head lice.Peppermint oil has calming effects on skin inflammation. You can mix peppermint oil into lip balm and body lotion for a nice cooling sensation. Mixing peppermint and lavender essential oils can improve eczema and psoriasis when applied topically. Thanks to anti-microbial properties of peppermint is an excellent ingredient to help cure acne flare ups. Peppermint oil can also hydrate burnt skin and relieve the pain from sunburns. You can mix peppermint oil with a bit of coconut oil and apply it directly to the affected area I love to add some to my nutri-hydrating Mist from Aloette to combine the healing properties of Aloe with the benefits of peppermint!
  4. Marvelous Mouth - I have recently started 'oil pulling' and peppermint is one of my favorite things to add along with my doTERRA On Guard blend® . My dental hygienist has commented on the reduction of plaque between my visits which is awesome and well it helps my mouth smell minty fresh without all the worrisome ingredients in store bought mouth wash! I have also noticed that peppermint when mixed with clove works great at reducing the 'sensitive tooth' pain I have had in the past!
  5. Better than a RED BULL – feeling a little sluggish in the morning, after a workout or while trying to study? Peppermint is great for awaking the mind, body and spirit ... again diffuse it, apply it topically or take a drop by mouth.
  6.  Digestive aid - love using peppermint to sooth nausea either adding a drop or two to water or rubbing behind the ears or diffusing in the air. The muscle relaxing components of peppermint also seem to help with symptoms in my gut after having had a gluten exposure reducing the bloating effects .
  7. Reduce Hunger Cravings - seriously I have been having great success with this use ~  using my 'aromatherapy' necklace to hold peppermint for when I find myself craving something 'sweet' or if you do not have a necklace take a few deep breaths direct from the bottle or put a couple drops on temples or even add a drop to your ice water! I alternate between this and the doTERRA Slim and Sassy® blend for my 'tea'

http://doterrablog.com/doterra-spearmint-essential-oil/
Spearmint Essential Oil
Spearmint Mentha spicata

Spearmint has been used for centuries for its digestive benefits. Its sweet, refreshing aroma is cleansing and uplifting, making it ideal to evoke a sense of focus and positive mood.

Health Benefits of Spearmint Essential Oil ~ source

The various medicinal properties of spearmint essential oil can be found below.
  1. Antiseptic: This oil works well as an antiseptic for wounds and ulcers, protecting them from becoming septic or developing other infections, while also helping them to heal faster. These antiseptic properties are due to the presence of components like Menthol, Myrcene and Caryophyllene.
  2. Antispasmodic: This property of Essential Oil of Spearmint comes from its menthol content, which has a relaxing and cooling effect on the nerves and muscles, and helps to relax contractions in the case of spasms.  Therefore, it is frequently prescribed to provide effective relief from spasmodic coughs, aches, pulling sensations and aches in the abdominal region and intestines. This includes it ability to soothe muscle strains or cramps, nervous convulsions, and even spasmodic cholera.
  3. Disinfectant: The antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties of Essential Oil of Spearmint make it a disinfectant. It can help get rid of both internal and external infections. It is particularly effective in protecting internal wounds and ulcers, like those in the stomach, food pipe, and intestines, from infections. In ancient Greece, it was used to treat infectious diseases like Scabies, Dermatitis, Athlete’s Foot, Syphilis, Gonorrhea and other infectious or transmittable diseases.
  4. Carminative: The relaxing properties of Essential Oil of Spearmint induce relaxation in the intestines and muscles of the abdominal region, thereby helping the gases formed in stomach and intestines to pass out of the body naturally. This provides relief from many health concerns, including uneasiness and restlessness, insomnia, headaches, stomachaches, indigestion, loss of appetite, chest pain, vomiting, cramps and other related symptoms.
  5. Cephalic: This oil has a relaxing and cooling effect on the brain, which removes stress on our cognitive center. It helps people to concentrate, and since it is a cephalic substance, it helps to cure headaches and other stress related neural problems. This oil is supposed to be good for the overall health and protection of the brain as well.
  6. Emenagogue: Problems with menstruation, such as irregular periods, obstructed menses and early menopause can be solved with the help of this essential oil. It promotes the secretion of hormones like estrogen, which facilitates menstruation and ensures good uterine and sexual health. This also delays the onset of menopause and relieves certain symptoms associated with menstruation like nausea, fatigue, and pain in the lower abdominal region.
  7. Stimulant: This essential oil stimulates the secretion of hormones and the discharge of enzymes, gastric juices and bile, while also stimulating nerves and brain function, and promoting good blood circulation. This keeps the metabolic activity at a high rate and also boosts the strength of the immune system because stimulating blood circulation boosts immunity and toxin removal.
  8. Restorative: The function of a restorative is to restore health and maintain proper functioning of all the organ systems operating in the body. A restorative also helps to repair the damage done to the body and aid in the recovery from injuries and wounds. It also helps people to regain strength after long bouts of illness.
  9. Insecticide: Spearmint essential oil is an effective insecticide and keeps away mosquitoes, white ants, ants, flies, and moths. It can also be safely applied on the skin for protection against mosquito bites. Spearmint essential oil is sometimes used in mosquito repellant creams, mats, and fumigants.
  10. Other Benefits The Essential Oil of Spearmint can help treat asthma and congestion due to its decongestant properties. It also relieves fevers, excess flatulence, constipation, sinusitis, acne, gum and teeth problems, migraines, stress and depression. Being far lower in menthol content, it can be safely given to children to relieve their various ailments.
These are just a few of the reasons  why I am taking advantage of stocking up on this must haves in any essential oil kit using the doTERRA Thanksgiving BOGO sale today!

Every been to a Shoe Box Swap?

... if not you are probably imagining it has something to do with other peoples USED STINKY SHOES and the thought of swapping them with your own ... but nope that's not it at all ... a Shoebox Swap in this context it is all about the fun amazing and therapeutic task of making hand stamped creating cards!

Those of us who love to share papercrafting get together to 'shoebox swap' as a way to make a whole bunch of different cards all in one night!

What each participate does is designs ONE quick and simple card and than puts all the supplies needed for the rest of the group to make that card into a 'shoe box'. At the night of the swap we sit around the table laughing and conversing about life while we take turns 'swapping boxes' until we've made all the cards in the group OR if it is a large group until we've made whatever 'cap' we put on the night ~ usually it is 8 cards to get done in the 2-2.5 hour time frame.

You can have an 'anything goes' theme to your swap or you can organize it around themes such as 'thank you cards' or 'birthday cards' or 'sympathy cards' or 'masculine cards' or 'feminine cards' or this time of year Holiday themed cards.

The great thing about 'shoe box swaps' is that it is an awesome chance to play with stamp sets and tools you might not yet have and either decide if you want to add them to your collection OR to just add some variety to your greeting card stash that is different from your own stamp sets or style!

They are also a great thing to do with the 'kids' for some family fun ~ children love to make stuff and spend time with adults crafting ~ inspire them young and nuture that creativity flare! Paper crafting and expression is a great form of meditation and therapy for children and adults a like!

I try to attend a swap every other month with a great group of ladies who are a part of the team from Stampin' Up! ... here are some examples from end of October's swap ... are they just so darling!
Reason for the Season - Stampin' Up!
Festival of Trees ~ Stampin' Up!

Snow Place Stamp set ~ Stampin' Up!

Joyful Season - Stampin' Up!

Home for Christmas ~ Stampin' Up!

Embellished Ornaments Stampin' Up!

Zentangled Festival of Trees Stampin' Up!

If you do not have enough fellow paper crafters in your circle to form your own swap and would like to join in on a shoebox swap with others and meet some new fellow paper crafting please swing on over to Facebook here and like the page to find out about upcoming options and either join us in one of our current ones OR if there is enough interest we can start a second one!

Dear Justin Trudeau

This opinion piece by Casandra Effe on Facebook that is going viral is well written and wanted to share it with those who might not 'Facebook' as well as my own take on it!

"Hey Justin. I’m Casandra, and I’m an average west coast, middle class mom voter. You and I are the same age. I have so much to learn in terms of diplomacy and leadership, and so I’m guessing you acknowledge this in yourself too. This is going to be quite the ride for you and I.

I have a pit in my stomach because I just stood behind a cardboard box with a lump in my throat, feeling like I was gambling my life away. I think that’s the seed of what’s churning in my belly… in a democracy, why do I feel like I have to “play my cards” when I vote? How many millions of us gambled today on whatever bet would be “not harper”?

My country’s electoral system throws away all votes that don’t “win”. This last election's votes meant two thirds of us weren't represented at all. That's crazy! I need you to know that even though I put my X next to your name, I did not vote for you. I voted against the alternative. And so with this knowledge, and knowing millions of other Canadians just made the same decision out of pure rage and fear, I hope you can do a few things in your newfound position.

Since the internet loves “Top Ten!” lists, here’s mine for you:
  1. Get real about your win. Accept it with humility and modesty, and treat your fellow left politicians with respect and gratitude, for it is THEIR supporters who got you here with your sweeping majority, and not your own.
  2. Change our electoral system. Be brave enough to see the big picture and not just for whom our voting system will immediately benefit. Be strong enough to face those that disagree or may lose their roles because a better system is needed for the health of our country. Be the one to recreate what democracy is in Canada. You have the chance to make history for your Trudeau name (round two), and what a magical gift that is… to have the ability to create a legacy.
  3. Rebuild Canada’s name on the world stage. I was once proud to sew my flag on my backpack. Now, I’m ashamed of my country. We can become peacekeepers again. We can be examples to the world of how we educate our youth, support our vulnerable people, and protect our mountain streams. We can disagree with the United States, and we don’t have to be business partners with countries that commit horrific crimes against humanity. We can be a world leader in more ways than one.
  4. Please don’t be bought. Your rewards for strength of character, your ethics, and being a true voice for Canada’s people today and 100 years from now will bring you far greater reward. Turn your back to those companies and lobbyists that think they can buy you (and Canada) in exchange for decisions that financially reward a few today and hurt people for generations.
  5. Protect our rare and natural resources and don’t get caught in the jargon. Climate Change, global warming, carbon emissions… the jargon is divisive. There are certain decisions that clearly DO destroy this blue planet upon which we survive, and those that don’t. I recognize the harvesting of our forests, minerals, metals and oil bring jobs and money to our country, but consider moderation, balance, and sustainable practices, instead of debating the validity of the “climate change” phrase.
  6. Related to #5 above, but worthy of its own number… please create fair subsidy practices. Either stop subsidizing oil, or start subsidizing energy alternatives. Refer to #4.
  7. Support science. Rebuild our libraries and the information learned from thousands of reputable, skilled scientists over decades in Canada. Support a system to archive this information rather than destroy it.
  8. Support an unbiased public information forum. Maybe this is the CBC. Maybe not. But probably… yes… the CBC. I’m guessing a truly democratic country thrives on the sharing of information that is non-partisan, non-religious, non-corporate, for the benefit of having an educated, engaged populace. Refer to #4.
  9. Listen and communicate in real ways - no political mumbo jumbo say-nothing jibberjabber. We’re all just people, and we all deserve to be spoken to with honesty and respect, even if it’s not decisions we agree with. We’re talking inclusion, veterans, aboriginal women, veterans, jobs, refugees, pot, the justice system, the TPP, pipelines, healthcare, the senate and government corruption. And it doesn’t stop there. Good luck, but a good start is always good communication.
  10. Bill C-51. Fix that thing. That’s like a bad sci-fi movie happening in real life. I can’t believe you voted for that in the first place. Refer to #3.
Thanks for your consideration.
Cass"

What Cassie has said here is inspiring ~ regardless of who you voted for yesterday NOW is the time to let the Liberals know what we need and expect as Canadians ... the Liberals made promises in their platform but those are not actual policy or plans yet. PLEASE the election process is not over just because we've voted yesterday and a 'winner' was announced ... NO ONE HAS WON YET not until we see the change they promised and it truly does benefit Canadians ;)

Please do not wait 4 years quietly watching bad choices or policy be made again and occasionally vent about it in social media where it may or may not be seen by those who can actually affect change as has happened for the past two elections.

Do not sit back and do nothing during the next four years and than complain about what they did or did not do do during their term as we head into the polls!

Our new MP's that were elected yesterday they SERVE US the little people, they SERVE the RIDING that elected them and they are our VOICE in Ottawa and they need to know what their riding needs / wants / expects of them!

The Unions, Big Business, certain large Advocacy groups all have a LOUD voice in Ottawa about what they 'need' because there is someone being paid to make sure they are heard there ~ we the LITTLE PEOPLE do not. Our MP they need FEEDBACK from the LITTLE PEOPLE and BEFORE the leader of their party unveils their 'big policy changes' otherwise without our voice they listen to the whispers of those who stand to gain from advocating for one thing at the expense of another that benefits only the group they are being paid to represent! The reality is that is how POLITICS works!

I encourage everyone to be like Casandra write to Justin Trudeau and the MP representing your riding and let them know YOUR top 10 as we head into our new government.

Do it NOW during the first 100 days as they 'form' their new policies and so forth!

I know I will be getting my thoughts together about what I like about their platforms and what scares the crap out of me as a taxpayer and what they can do to help alleviate that fear for myself as a voter as they move forward specially if they want to help ensure that they get to serve more than just the 4 years that this election of 'anyone but Harper' appears to have bought them.

They said they can 'be the REAL change we need' but now let them PROVE THAT by listening to the people about the CHANGE THEY WANT!

Have an amazing day!

Do you Scrapbook?

https://www.mymemories.com/store/display_product_page?id=VLRK-QP-1506-88791
My Memories ~ Autumn Owl designs
I love to scrapbook for me it is a great way for me to recharge my energy ~ and digital scrapbooking is one of my favorite mediums. I love digital scrapbooking for several reasons.
  1. It is a mess free on the go can do it anywhere kind of hobby.
  2. The supplies to do it take up minimum SPACE in the house - just need a computer or laptop and a way you go
  3. Versatility - you can save your work to a digital file and share online with family or friends or download them to a digital frame to 'showcase' in your home.
  4.  It is the most cost effective form of scrapbooking. Purchase a ribbon download and you can use it over and over again and never 'run out' of your favorite ribbon. Plus if you are like me and also like to 'traditional scrapbook' a digital scrapbook program is great for 'designing and planning' your pages before converting them to 'traditional' so can save you money on pages that you might start and 'not like' cause digitally you can tweak and alter until its perfect before making it 'real'.
For years I used the My Digital Studio software from Stampin' Up! and was devastated to learn they were retiring that line and would no longer be offering new downloads, printing or support for it.

Those who already know me will know that CHANGE of any kind is scary for me and something I instinctively have always resisted as a result.  HOWEVER the older and wiser I get the more I can remind myself that change can be AWESOME! Some of the biggest and scariest changes in my life have yielded me the best outcomes so now when faced with change I try hard to focus on that and work through the change with the benefits it can bring!

So when faced with the loss of my favorite digital scrapbook program having any 'growth' I went in search of other options and found the My Memories Digital Scrapbooking was offering to support the My Digital Studio community with a conversion option to allow us to keep and use all our current downloads as well as support with continued new downloads, printing and other services. So I jumped on that chance and have to admit that I am loving the My Memories options even more than I loved My Digital Studio. I do miss that it matched so seamlessly with all my other Stampin' Up! products HOWEVER it is a small loss compared to all the things I have gained.

These are some of the cool pages I have made while playing with the new program ...LOVING the dimension of some of the new digital embellishments the program has come with plus it has some 'quick page' options where you just open and drag and drop your photos into them!
Nevada the spoiled princess cat!

Family vacation shot
My men!
So do you scrapbook?

What's your favorite medium for doing so ... traditional or digital or like me a 'hybrid' type?

Do you like to head out to 'crops'? If you are local to London ON and are looking for someone to crop with I get together once a month and open up the craft room to others to come and crop for the afternoon. Participants bring your own consumable materials but cost of the afternoon allows you to borrow any of my stamps, inks and other tools to help with your creations! Check out my events page for upcoming dates.

Have an amazing day!
